A potentially contaminated aerosol cloud develops after every treatment; this spreads a number of metres from the patient's mouth into the practice room. For around 10 - 30 minutes after the treatment, the aerosol is deposited on the surrounding surfaces and objects. Thorough and quick-acting disinfection which also keeps waiting times as short as possile is vital after every single treatment.
According to the recommendation of the Commission for Hospital Hygiene and Infection Prevention (KRINKO), targeted disinfection measures are necessary if there is visible contamination of even non-patient surfaces (including floors) with blood, salvia or other potentially infectious secretions, or if there is a special risk situation. The efficiency of cleaning and disinfection also depends on the nature of the surfaces.
