The suction unit has the function to remove aerosols, liquids and solid substances from the patients mouth. The contaminated suction hose may pose a risk of infection to the patient if there is a reflux of liquid or gaseous components. There is also a risk for staff during maintenance, cleaning and repair work on the suction system, as well as for technicians during service work.
According to the recommendation of the DAHZ (Deutscher Arbeitskreis für Hygiene in der Zahnmedizin) in the DAHZ Hygiene Guide 14th edition 2021, it is advisable to aspirate a non-foaming cleaning agent or disinfectant at least at the end of each treatment day to reduce the risk of infection and to avoid unpleasant odors. Particularly when cleaning and disinfecting the suction system, it is important to ensure that a combined method is used.
Not every disinfectant is suitable for this particular area. Depending on the active ingredients, pH values or special physical conditions, the effectiveness cannot unfold unhindered.
